How Not To Do A Fireworks Safety Lesson ... Happy 4th!

As adults, we get it. Fireworks are dangerous things. They can be a lot of fun, but yes, they are dangerous. Unfortunately, kids sometimes need to be reminded. And what better way to remind the kids than to botch a safety demonstration by setting a bystander on fire?

Really? Yes. According to the Chicago Tribune, Hillside Fire Department Chief Michael Kuryla was demonstrating the power of legally purchased novelty fireworks when the accident occurred. He used a sparkler to light two larger fireworks that were placed in a canister on a wooden pallet.

Unfortunately, the canister fell over. Then, it went off, shooting flames directly at the spectators. One woman, who ironically worked for the Fire Safety Alliance, was struck in the foot. Other spectators put the fire out and she was sent to the hospital for treatment.

So yes, children, fireworks are dangerous. And you shouldn't light them up near crowds, residential areas, or dry brush. And thanks to the weather, there's plenty of that.

Instead, consider heading to Mundelin, Wheaton, or Plainfield. Nevermind, those are all cancelled. There's always the Navy Pier, right?

The cancellations do bring up an important point, however. If they are cancelling those massive displays due to the dry weather, perhaps individuals should consider the same. Even legally purchased fireworks can set off a fire, leaving you or someone else homeless, and possibly subjecting you to a massive lawsuit.

Be smart. Be a spectator to the pyrotechnic arts.
